Despite losing support in his party’s apex policy making body, former Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli said on Wednesday that he would continue to lead the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) and challenge appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki’s appointment as the Prime Minister.
Addressing the party’s central committee meeting, Oli said he will not run away, instead he will fight the political battle under his own leadership to seek reinstatement of the dissolved parliament, and annulment of Karki as the Prime Minister.
Last week, the central secretariat of the Party, by an overwhelming majority, had asked Oli to step down for the large-scale violence and trail of destruction that took place during the two-day GenZ movement on September 8 and 9. Oli invited all the breakaway groups and individuals to return to the party for, “a struggle for democracy”.
As Oli was questioning the legality and constitutionality of the government, different groups and individuals — some of them associated with UML and the Nepali Congress — have filed altogether around a dozen petitions in the SC challenging both dismissal of the House and Karki’s appointment as PM. The court has fixed October 29 as the date for hearing the cases.
