(AP Photo)NYC Mayoral Election 2025 Results LIVE Updates: Millions cast their ballots in New York City to elect a new mayor in the first major electoral test of President Donald Trump’s second term and Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani won the NYC mayoral polls on Tuesday. The biggest contest was between Mamdani and independent candidate and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, alongside Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. In a separate race for governor in Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Democratic congresswoman and CIA officer has become the state’s first female governor.
Referendum on Trump: On the eve of New York City mayoral polls, President Trump announced on Truth Social that he is backing independent candidate Cuomo, who lost Democratic primary to Mamdani in June this year. Trump said a vote for Republican nominee Sliwa would be a vote for Mamdani. “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him,” Trump said. The US president’s policies, including tariffs, his “big, beautiful” budget bill threatened rural hospitals and health insurance coverage for millions and the recent federal shutdown could play a factor in the polls.

Mamdani- A new star for Democrats in NYC: Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Muslim state legislator, has backed radical changes in order to address economic inequality. Mamdani’s approach of having a bold agenda and an inspirational approach has brought in thousands of supporters in New York in his camp, and the NYC mayor frontrunner has also received endorsements from likes of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to campaign on his behalf.
