Nepal: Youth leader of main Opposition party gunned down, sparks protests

The Parliament was adjourned for the second week in a row as the Communist Party has been obstructing it.

The regional chief of the youth wing of the main Opposition party of Nepal, who was at the forefront of agitations against a Bill now being considered by Nepal’s Parliament to amend the country’s Constitution, was shot dead on Monday.

Durga Tiwari, regional chief of Youth Force — the youth wing of the main opposition Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) — was shot dead in Butwal, at least 250 km west of Kathmandu. The police said he was shot by an unidentified assailant on a motorbike.

Tiwari’s death has triggered unprecedented tension and protests in Butwal that has remained the epicentre of the anti-amendment movement for over two weeks. The anti-amendment movement also opposes a proposed divide of hills and plain areas and redrawing boundaries of provinces .

Tiwari’s body is being kept at a hospital in Devdah but his supporters are resisting its transfer to another hospital for postmortem, demanding that the killers be arrested first.
