Nepal MP suspended for ‘asking for donation’ to secure ministerial berth

Party spokesperson and general secretary Mukul Dhakal said Dr Shrestha has been suspended both as an MP and active member of the party and a final decision on the issue will be taken after the discipline and conduct committee investigates into the matter within the next three days.

A member of the House of Representative belonging to the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has been suspended after an audio leak in which he allegedly is asking a hospital owner for Rs 20 million which he needed to pay to the party leadership to buy a ministerial berth in last government.

Dr Dhaka Kumar Shrestha had allegedly approached Durga Prasai, a private hospital owner, asking for the said amount to ensure his appointment as health minister in the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government, in which the RSP was a constituent.

Party spokesperson and general secretary Mukul Dhakal said Dr Shrestha has been suspended both as an MP and active member of the party and a final decision on the issue will be taken after the discipline and conduct committee investigates into the matter within the next three days.

In the audio conversation, MP Shrestha is allegedly heard as saying that his becoming the health minister is almost certain but he needs to pay around Rs 20 million to members of the party’s core group instantly.

Prasai is heard as promising to arrange the money for Dr Shrestha seeking to ease restrictions on private medical colleges and hospitals. Prasai told ENS that he has got evidence of many others cheated by cooperatives on huge interests forcing some of them to committing suicide.
