Eric Trump has publicly claimed that New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, “hates the Indian population.” (Reuters) British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan has pushed back at Eric Trump after the US president’s son levelled sweeping allegations against New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of being anti-Indian and antisemitic.
In a recent interview, Eric Trump described the 34-year-old Democrat as someone who “hates the Indian population” and branded him a “socialist communist”. He also claimed Mamdani held hostility toward both Indian and Jewish communities.
Hasan criticised the remarks on X, sharing the clip and writing: “Zohran Mamdani is Indian. This is why they call Eric the dumbest of the dumb sons.” Hasan, whose family traces its roots to Hyderabad, questioned the logic behind framing an Indian-origin politician as anti-Indian.
Zohran Mamdani *is* Indian. This is why they call Eric the dumbest of the dumb sons. https://t.co/wh7LaJFKkH

Eric Trump’s criticism extended to Mamdani’s political positions, including his campaign statement that he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York. In the interview, Trump claimed the city had elected “a socialist… communist… who wants to nationalise grocery stores and wants to arrest Netanyahu, hates the Jewish people, hates the Indian population.”
Mamdani, the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, has not responded to Trump’s allegations. Earlier this month, he made history by winning the New York City mayoral race, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest leader in more than a century when he takes office on 1 January. His victory in a city with one of the world’s largest Jewish populations adds further significance to the moment.
