The family of Nimrod Cohen, one of the Israeli soldiers who was abducted by Hamas on October 7, 2023, has released never-before-seen photos and a video showing his capture.

According to Israeli media, the half-minute-long video was recently seized by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and transferred to the family. The video shows Cohen being captured and taken across the border into Gaza.

In the video, Cohen can be seen being pulled from a military vehicle by Hamas gunmen and led into the Gaza Strip.

According to the Families’ Headquarters for the Return of the Abductees, the release of the footage is part of its ongoing efforts to keep the abductees’ plight in the public eye and increase pressure on the government to secure their release.

“What you see in the video is the greatest nightmare for a mother in the State of Israel. My son, helpless, taken and brutally dragged to hell, and I, as a mother, have nothing to do,” his mother, Viki Cohen, said.

689 days in Hamas captivity

Cohen, who was 19 years old at the time of his abduction has now spent 689 days in captivity in the Gaza Strip. He was the only survivor of four soldiers who were in a tank that was attacked by Hamas terrorists with RPG fire and explosive devices.

The video surfaces at a time when the families of nearly 50 hostages, who are still being held in the Gaza Strip by Hamas, are becoming desperate to secure their release. With the IDF launching the operation to take over Gaza, they have expressed fears for the safety of their loved ones.

The families are also holding near-daily protests calling on the government to reach a deal with Hamas for their safe return. While around 50 of the 251 people who were abducted on October 7, 2023 are still in Gaza, the IDF believes that only around 20 are alive. The rest were either killed during the October 2023 attack or while in captivity, according to Israeli officials.

However, on Monday, US President Donald Trump told reporters that a few more may have died since. There are “probably a little bit less than 20 because I think one or two are gone.”
