The International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed that it will be launching an external investigation into its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, following allegations of sexual misconduct . This move comes as a significant development, ensuring transparency and accountability within the ICC’s highest ranks.

The court’s governing body announced the move in a statement on Monday, emphasising the need for “a fully independent, impartial and fair process”, according to a report by Associated Press.

Khan, who oversees investigations into war crimes, including those linked to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, has denied the allegations. He said he would continue his duties while any matters related to the investigation would be handled by deputy prosecutors.

The allegations, which were raised last month, were reported to the court’s governing body, prompting Khan to request an internal investigation at that time. The ICC also noted that Khan’s legal team had previously claimed the misconduct allegations were part of a misinformation campaign against his office.

The ICC, a permanent tribunal based in The Hague, prosecutes individuals accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression.

The court is currently reviewing Khan’s request for arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his defence chief, and Hamas leaders.
