Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that Mohammad Sinwar, the Hamas Gaza chief and younger brother of the group’s leader Yahya Sinwar, has been eliminated.
It comes seven months after Yahya was killed by a single gunshot to the head during an hour-long firefight with trainee soldiers on a routine operation in the Rafah area of the Gaza Strip.

Yahya, known as the architect of the October 7 attack, had been targeted by intelligence services and the Israeli Defence Forces for over a year before his death.
Mohammad rose to the top leadership of the Palestinian militant group last year, following the death of his brother.
Hamas has yet to confirm Sinwar’s death.
How was Mohammad Sinwar eliminated?
As per Israeli media, Mohammad was targeted in Israeli airstrikes in southern Gaza earlier this month. According to these reports, he was killed on May 13 after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) dropped a large number of bombs on a tunnel hideout beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis.
The IDF claimed the strike was aimed at a Hamas command and control centre located underground. Multiple airstrikes pounded the facility in one of the most intense attacks on the Strip in recent weeks. Footage from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the hospital complex, with surrounding buildings heavily damaged.
While the IDF maintained that the strike was directed at high-value militant targets, the aftermath sparked concern among humanitarian workers. Medics on the ground described the situation as a “catastrophe,” with many bodies left buried under the rubble and no clear count of civilian casualties.
