Hamas has issued a response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address at the United Nations, calling his remarks “blatant lies and contradictions”, the BBC reported.
In a statement released on Telegram, the group said Netanyahu’s words were “misleading” and would not change the truth. “The world has become more aware of what Israel is doing in Gaza,” Hamas said, describing Israeli actions as “occupation based on lies, misinformation, and systematic killing,” according to the BBC.
The statement urged the international community to stop the war in Gaza, press Israel to withdraw from the territory, and ensure the entry of food and medicine. It also called for progress towards recognising a Palestinian state.
After the UK, France, Canada, Australia, and other countries broke with the United States to recognise an independent Palestinian state, Netanyahu called a two-state solution “sheer madness. It’s insane, and we won’t do it.”
Netanyahu earlier told the UN General Assembly that Israel “must finish the job” against Hamas in Gaza, defending the war despite international criticism and walkouts by delegates from several countries during his speech.
Netanyahu has faced accusations of war crimes and increasing calls from abroad to halt the war. Friday’s appearance at the UN was his chance to set out Israel’s position before the international community.
Hamas is designated a terrorist organisation by the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union.
