Nepal’s main opposition, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist), and some members of the ruling Nepali Congress cornered the government in Parliament on Wednesday demanding a credible probe into the smuggling of gold in huge quantities and resignation of Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha to ensure fair investigation.
Communist Party of Nepal (UML) said the home minister should resign to ensure a fair probe into the smuggling case.
Dr Sunil Sharma, a member of the House of Representatives, endorsed the opposition demand and demanded resignation of Finance Minister Prakash Mahat. The internal revenue department had seized over 100 kg of gold, which was reportedly smuggled from Hong Kong after it was cleared by the customs department of the Tribhuvan International Airport last week.
CPN (UML) leader K P Oli said the home minister should convince the country about his innocence in the seizure of gold.
