FBI arrests US judge for blocking immigration operation

FBI Director Kash Patel announced on social media that the judge “intentionally misdirected” federal agents away from a man they were trying to take into custody at her courthouse.

A judge in Milwaukee has been arrested by the FBI for allegedly helping a man escape immigration authorities, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between the Trump administration and the judiciary over immigration enforcement, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Judge Hannah Dugan was taken into custody on Friday after being accused of “intentionally misdirecting” federal agents who were trying to detain a man at her courthouse. FBI Director Kash Patel shared the news on social media, saying: “Thankfully our agents chased down the perp on foot and he’s been in custody since, but the Judge’s obstruction created increased danger to the public,” according to AP. Patel’s post on X  has since been deleted.

Dugan made a brief appearance in federal court in Milwaukee the same day and was released. Her next hearing is scheduled for 15 May.

Her lawyer, Craig Mastantuono, defended the judge in court saying, “Judge Dugan wholeheartedly regrets and protests her arrest. It was not made in the interest of public safety.” He declined to comment further when approached by an AP reporter.

This case comes as part of a wider effort by the Trump administration to clamp down on local officials who are seen as standing in the way of federal immigration policies. In January, the Justice Department instructed prosecutors to look into bringing criminal charges against state and local authorities who block or interfere with federal operations.

Details of the case against Dugan have not yet been made public, and the Justice Department has not issued a comment. Attempts by AP to contact the Milwaukee County Courts and Chief Judge Carl Ashley for a statement were unsuccessful.

Judge Dugan, elected in 2016 to Milwaukee County Court Branch 31, has served in both the probate and civil divisions. Before becoming a judge, she worked with Legal Action of Wisconsin and the Legal Aid Society. She earned her law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1987.
