New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh warned that if Donald Trump imposes tariffs on Canada then the country should respond with retaliatory tariffs.

US president-elect Donald Trump has gone so far as to suggest the US should take back control of the canalDonald Trump has expressed interest to annex Canada to the US.

In a sharp rebuke to US President-elect Donald Trump’s statements about annexing Canada, New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh, in a video message shared on X (formerly Twitter), said: “Our country is not for sale. Not now, not ever,”  condemning Trump’s long-standing rhetoric about making Canada the 51st US state.

Singh, a former ally of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who recently resigned from the top post, wrote along with the video message: “I have a message for Donald Trump. We’re good neighbours. But, if you pick a fight with Canada – there will be a price to pay.”

In the 38-second clip, Singh began by saying he had a message for Trump: “I have a message for Donald Trump. Our county is not for sale. Now now, not ever. I have lived across this country and I can tell you Canadians are a proud people. We’re proud of our country and we’re ready to fight like hell to defend it.”

Singh went on to say that Canadian firefighters are helping with efforts in California with forest fires ravaging home.

“That’s who we are. We show up and support our neighbours,” he said and followed it up with a warning for Trump.

“But if Donald Trump thinks, if you think you can pick a fight with us, there’ll be a price to pay. I’ve committed that if Donald Trump imposes tariffs on us we should respond with retaliatory tariffs in kind. I think that anyone running as prime minister should do the same,” Singh added.

Earlier in December, Trump, 78, claimed on his social media platform Truth Social, “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st state,” and touted supposed benefits of such a move. On Christmas, he listed these “benefits,” including slashing taxes by over 60%, doubling businesses’ size, and offering unparalleled military protection.

Trudeau, who recently resigned as Liberal Party leader but remains in office until a successor is chosen, has dismissed Trump’s comments as absurd. “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States,” Trudeau had said, calling for mutual respect in cross-border relations.

Trump’s ambitions have not stopped at Canada. He has also revived his controversial 2019 proposal to acquire Greenland, this time suggesting that economic or military force could be used to take control of the autonomous Danish territory. European leaders have strongly condemned these remarks, insisting that Greenland’s territorial integrity is non-negotiable.
