The lawyer said that his resignation would not delay the proceedings. (Reuters photo)One of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ defense attorneys has withdrawn from the disgraced music producer’s criminal sex-trafficking case, according to new court filings, reported New York Post. Anthony Ricco filed a motion on Thursday seeking to step down as one of the six attorneys representing the Bad Boy Records founder.
His request is pending judicial approval, as a judge must determine if sufficient grounds exist for the withdrawal.
“Under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs,” Ricco stated in his affidavit filed in Manhattan federal court, as per NY Post. He formally requested the court to grant his withdrawal but did not provide specific reasons for his departure.
Ricco said that his decision followed discussions with Combs’ lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo. He also suggested that the brevity of his affidavit was due to concerns over attorney-client privilege but assured the court that “there are sufficient reasons” for his request.
The lawyer also said that his resignation would not delay the proceedings, as Combs still has five attorneys representing him.
The trial remains scheduled for May 5.
Combs, 54, has pleaded not guilty to allegations that he forced women into drug-induced sex acts. He has been held without bail since his arrest in September. If convicted on the top charge, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and could receive life imprisonment.
In addition to the criminal case, Combs is facing over 40 lawsuits from men and women alleging that he drugged and sexually assaulted or raped them.
