With less than 10 days left for one of the most awaited US presidential elections, the reports have emerged that Chinese state-affiliated hackers tried to intercept audio from calls of US political figures, including an unnamed campaign adviser of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The Washington Post, in a report, stated that FBI and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency were investigating the incident wherein unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure was granted, carried out by people who are associated with China.
Trump’s campaign and the FBI did not issue any statement related to the incident. The report further added that the hackers also accessed unencrypted communications like text messages.
In an earlier report, news agency Reuters reported that hackers based out of China targeted phones used by people affiliated with the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Former President Trump and his running mate JD Vance were also targeted, according to reports by various media outlets last week.
Earlier this year, the Trump Campaign was hacked by Iranian hackers. The US Justice Department had charged three members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps with the hack, accusing them of trying to disrupt the November 5 US presidential election.
According to a report by the New York Times, the Trump campaign was made aware last week that Republican presidential and vice presidential candidates were among a number of people inside and outside of the government whose phone numbers were targeted through the infiltration of the Verizon system.
The Chinese embassy in Washington had said last week that it was unaware of any such hacking attempts being made and added that Beijing opposes and combats all forms of cyber attack.
