Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday, urged for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East at the United Nations General Assembly. He emphasised China’s growing role as a global peacemaker and highlighted its diplomatic efforts in conflicts, including the war in Ukraine.
Wang’s remarks came after Israel’s airstrike killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut, which raised concerns of a wider regional conflict.
Referring to the fighting in Gaza and Lebanon, Wang said, “The question of Palestine is the biggest wound to human conscience.” He called for a quick ceasefire and reiterated China’s support for a two-state solution to resolve the crisis.
China has been increasing its involvement in global diplomacy, positioning itself as a challenger to the US’s traditional role. Recently, China hosted talks between Palestinian factions and brokered a peace deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Wang said, “Peace is the most precious thing in our world today,” underlining China’s commitment to resolving conflicts through dialogue.
Wang also spoke about China’s peace plan for Ukraine, pushing for talks between Russia and Ukraine to end the war. He emphasised that China aims to promote dialogue and peace without taking sides, stating, “China is committed to playing a constructive role, engaging in shuttle mediation and promoting talks for peace.”
However, China’s involvement in Ukraine has faced criticism.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy questioned the intentions behind the peace plans from China and Brazil, while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken pointed out China’s support for Russia’s military production, which contradicts its peace efforts.
Wang also addressed China’s stance on Taiwan, asserting that the reunification of Taiwan with mainland China is inevitable. He said, “The complete reunification of China will be achieved,” despite tensions over control of the Taiwan Strait.
While China promotes its role as a peacebuilder, concerns remain over its assertiveness in regional disputes, particularly in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.
