Three men were killed and eight others injured after gunfire broke out inside a crowded nightclub in Brooklyn, New York early on Sunday, police said.

The shooting happened shortly before 3:30 am at the Taste of the City Lounge in Crown Heights after what officials described as “a dispute.” New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said investigators believe more than one person may have fired weapons.

Police recovered at least 36 shell casings from inside the club and found a gun on a nearby street, Tisch told reporters, according to the Associated Press (AP).

The victims and injured, aged between 27 and 61, include eight men and three women. All injured are being treated in hospital for wounds that are not life-threatening, police said.

Tisch noted that the incident comes at a time when New York is recording historically low levels of gun violence. “We have the lowest numbers of shooting incidents and shooting victims seven months into the year that we’ve seen on record in the city of New York,” she said, according to AP.

“Something like this is, of course, an anomaly … but we’re going to investigate and get to the bottom of what went down.”
