As we eagerly await the final results of the 2024 US elections, Nevada and Arizona stand out as the last two swing states still counting votes. These states are crucial in determining the next president and have significant implications for the overall electoral landscape.
In Nevada, 94% of the expected votes have been counted. Donald Trump is currently leading with 51.0% of the vote, while Kamala Harris trails at 47.2%. Meanwhile, Arizona has reported 70% of its expected votes, showing Trump ahead with 52.3%, compared to Harris’s 46.8%.
Arizona: A closer look
Voting by mail is extremely popular in Arizona; nearly 90% of voters cast their ballots early, most by mail, in 2020. Election officials in Arizona can begin processing and tabulating mail ballots upon receipt, but results cannot be released until one hour after polls close.
Any mail ballots dropped off on Election Day itself cannot be processed until the polls have closed. This can often result in a sizable number of ballots being counted later— in 2022, those “late early” votes comprised one-fifth of all ballots in Maricopa County, the state’s largest.
Nevada’s Counting Process
Nevada’s slow vote counting in 2020—where news outlets did not call the state for Biden until five days after Election Day—led to numerous memes and frustrations. However, officials assert that changes made since then should expedite the process.
Counties are now permitted to begin processing and counting mail ballots as early as October 21. Additionally, workers can start tabulating early in-person votes at 8 a.m. PT on Election Day, rather than waiting until polls close.
Despite these improvements, Nevada may still experience delays. The state is unique among battlegrounds in that it accepts late-arriving mail ballots. Any ballot postmarked by November 5 will still be counted if it arrives within four days. Historically, these late ballots tend to favor Democrats, suggesting a potential shift toward Harris as votes are counted post-Election Day.
