Two police officers were shot dead and a third wounded while responding to a domestic disturbance in northern Utah, authorities said on Monday.
The shooting happened late on Sunday in Tremonton, a city of about 10,000 people, 120 km north of Salt Lake City.
Police said a sheriff’s deputy and a police dog were also injured and taken to hospital, where they were reported to be in fair condition.
According to a police statement, after the officers were shot, bystanders persuaded the suspect to put down his weapon. SWAT teams later cleared the home to make sure there was no further danger.
The man was arrested on charges of aggravated murder. His name has not yet been released.
Earlier, Brigham City Police Detective Crystal Beck told reporters that officers came under fire as soon as they arrived at the scene. “Upon arrival, they immediately began taking fire,” she said. “They requested additional units. And then stopped answering their radio.”
Beck said that once reinforcements arrived, “they were able to locate the subject of the shooting and take him into custody.” She added that there was no further threat to the public.
