Weather update: Heavy rains disrupt life in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, TN’s Nilgiris; rainfall in South India to decline from today

Heavy rainfall will continue over parts of South India on Friday and is expected to decrease thereafter, as per the daily India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast.

Coastal Karnataka, parts of Kerala, Goa and Gujarat will continue to receive heavy to very heavy isolated rainfall today (July 7) due to the southwest monsoon. According to the daily India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, heavy rainfall will continue over parts of South India on Friday and is expected to decrease thereafter.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to continue over Konkan and Goa, the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra during the next two days and over the state of Gujarat for the next five days. The northeast regions of India and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are most likely to receive heavy rainfall, the IMD bulletin said.

Red alerts in parts of Kerala

Following heavy rainfall Thursday, several districts of Kerala were flooded, leading to the displacement of thousands from their homes. The weather department also issued a red alert in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Three people in the state reportedly died in rain-related incidents.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has issued a high tide alert for the Kerala coast till the end of the day on July 7 and warned fishermen against venturing into the sea.

A team of Kerala Fire and Rescue Services evacuated people from the low-lying Kuttanad area in Alappuzha on Thursday amid a flood-like situation due to heavy rainfall, ANI reported. Parts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode districts also witnessed a rise in water levels in rivers and canals after heavy downpours.

Heavy rains in coastal Karnataka till Sat

The coastal region of Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts, are likely to receive thunderstorms and heavy showers today. An orange alert was issued in the region by the IMD on Wednesday.

Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said in a statement that the intensity of rains in the state will come down after July 8. “Active monsoon conditions are very likely to continue till July 8, resulting in widespread rains over most districts across the state. Thereafter, rains are likely to come down over the state,” it said.

Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris takes a hit

While the IMD predicts heavy rainfall and lightning in parts of Tamil Nadu, incessant rainfall wreaked havoc in the hilly Nilgiris district of the state on Thursday. A few trees fell on the roads, creating traffic chaos in a few taluks, though there has not been much damage to public properties, said district administration officials. In view of the heavy rain forecast, a rain holiday has been announced for all schools in the district.

Amarnath Yatra suspended

The Amarnath Yatra was suspended on Friday due to bad weather as rain lashed many parts of Kashmir, officials said. With heavy rains early Friday, activity along both the Baltal and the Pahalgam routes had to be halted.

“The yatra has been suspended and no pilgrim is being allowed to move towards the holy cave shrine this morning,” the officials said. The yatra is expected to resume once the weather improves.

The IMD predicts heavy rainfall at isolated places over the Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad region today.

Yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane

Heavy rainfall interspersed with spells of extremely heavy showers is expected in Mumbai city and the suburbs today. The IMD has issued a yellow alert in Mumbai and Thane for the next 24 hours. In the neighbouring districts of Palghar and Raigad, meanwhile, the weather bureau has sounded an orange alert until Saturday.

On Thursday, Mumbai witnessed sporadic spells of rainfall. Even though the frequency of showers wasn’t continuous, the amount of rain was intense. The city also experienced a cloudy sky throughout the day.

Rains in Delhi too

Rainfall is set to continue over several parts of Delhi on Friday and over the weekend, the forecast indicated. Rains lashed several parts of the national capital on Thursday morning.

According to the IMD, no significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over most parts of the country during the next five days. As of Thursday, the lowest minimum temperature of 20.5°C was reported at Sikar (East Rajasthan) over the plains of the country. The highest maximum temperature of 40.0°C was reported at Jaisalmer (West Rajasthan).
