— The African Union (AU) was admitted as a new member of the G20, barely three months after India floated the idea of including the organisation.

— The AU is an intergovernmental organisation of the 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. Hence, statement 1 is not correct.

— It as launched on July 9, 2002, the grouping is the successor of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was formed in 1963.

— The AU seeks to build an Integrated, Prosperous and Peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens. Hence, statement 2 is correct.

— The AU’s secretariat, the African Union Commission, is based in Addis Ababa. It is collectively the group has a gross domestic product (GDP) of $3 trillion with some 1.4 billion people. Hence, statement 3 is not correct.

2. (d)

FYI:

— The Danube Delta has provided Ukraine with an alternative passage for its grain after Russia withdrew from the Black Sea grain deal last month. The deal, brokered by the UN and Turkey, used to provide safe passage for cargo ships carrying grain from Ukrainian Black Sea ports of Odessa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi.

— The Danube, Europe’s second-longest river, has historically been crucial for the movement of freight.

— The Danube River Basin can be divided into three sub-regions:

Upper Basin: It extends from the source of the Danube in Germany to Bratislava in Slovakia.

Middle Basin: It is the largest of the three sub-regions, extending from Bratislava to the dams of the Iron Gate Gorge on the border between Serbia and Romania.

Lower Basin: The lowlands, plateaus and mountains of Romania and Bulgaria form the Lower Basin of the River Danube.

— Somalia is on the brink of its worst famine in half a century as drought intensifies and global food prices soar, leaving hundreds of thousands of people at risk of dying from starvation.

— The United Nations has warned that parts of the country will be hit by famine in the coming weeks – and the projection is it will be more severe than in 2011, when famine killed more than a quarter of a million people there, about half of them children.

— Famine is declared in an area when severe hunger is already widespread, and when people have started dying of starvation because they do not have enough nutritious food.

According to the United Nations, the affected area must meet three conditions:

(i) At least 20% of the population is facing extreme food shortages

5. (d)

— Singapore’s police have seized S$1 billion ($734.32 million) in assets from a gang of foreigners laundering proceeds from organised crime, including plush bungalows in the most sought-after addresses, bundles of cash, luxury cars, jewellery, handbags and gold bars.

— In one of its biggest money-laundering cases, Singapore police launched simultaneous raids on residences across the city-state, from the Orchard Road shopping belt to the resort island of Sentosa.
