US tourist loses wallet on Gujarat train, honest shopkeeper returns it: ‘This is real India’

Whether it’s offering a home-cooked meal, giving directions in a bustling street, or returning lost belongings, there have been countless stories of the integrity and kindness of Indians towards tourists. It reflects the country’s ethos: Atithi Devo Bhava (guests are equivalent to God). In one such heartwarming incident, a tourist from the United States, who lost her wallet on a train in Gujarat, heaved a sigh of relief when her belongings were safely returned to her by the end of the day.

According to a video shared by Instagram user @animuchx, a tourist named Steph lost her wallet while travelling on a train in Gujarat’s Bhuj district. Fortunately, a local shopkeeper named Chirag discovered the wallet and made sure it was returned to her. Despite Steph offering him some money as a gesture of gratitude, Chirag politely declined, winning hearts for his honesty and kindness.

The now-viral video shows Steph offering money to Chirag, and him refusing to take it. “I feel like there’s so much negative news that comes out of India and there’s so much positive that happens here. Thank you Chirag for your kindness, we need more people like him,” Steph says in the video.

Shared on April 17, the video prompted several users to react to the video. “An Indian who has helped will feel offended if money is offeredm,” a user wrote. “I feel proud that I was born and raised in Kutch. Chirag has beautifully portrayed the essence of Kutch and India,” another user commented.

“Wow.! Couple of days back lost my baby’s gold bracelet in a hotel. When called back to enquire over phone call, we were told it’s safe with the cashier drawer as a waiter has handed it over to him. We collect it the next day! So there are good people and also bad people everywhere. Kindly don’t label my Bharat in other way,” a third user said.
