In most colleges around the world, the dress code for one’s convocation ceremony includes formal attire and black robes. However, some institutions in Japan, like the University of Kyoto, Kanazawa College of Art, and the Kyoto City University have a reverse tradition where graduating students are allowed to wear any costume they want.

As a result, the students turn up in highly elaborate costumes, such as dressing up as manga characters or cosplaying their favourite superhero or snack.

Recently, pictures from the graduation ceremony of the above-mentioned colleges are going viral on Twitter.

Commenting on one such picture, a Twitter user wrote, “This would honestly make multiple hour long graduations entertaining and not mind numbing.” Another person wrote, “It works in a society where respect and following norms is the default and occasional fun/banter/mischief seasons things up. It would not work in the US without turning into a degenerate clown show, taking away whatever little tradition that is left.”

It is interesting to note that if graduation ceremonies are flamboyant in Japan, then the island nation also has an interesting Halloween subculture that is exactly the opposite.

This popular Halloween subculture is called ‘Mundane Halloween’ or ‘Jimi Halloween’ (Jimi in Japanese stands for simple or mundane). For the ‘Jimi Halloween’ people dress in simple outfits and mimic ordinary scenes from everyday life. People dress in superordinary but specific looks such as “a person who works from Starbucks” or “a guy waiting for his girlfriend outside the mall’s bathroom”.
