“Work-life balance” and “toxic work culture” are two topics being discussed and debated globally. A couple of days ago, reports about managers at Tesla’s Grünheide factory in Germany being sent to the homes of around 30 German employees who called in sick, sparked widespread conversation on social media.

A Reddit user by the name of “pranagrapher” posted a question on the “Indiasocial” community about managers’ reactions to sick leaves. The user asked, “Did you have managers who actually check if you’re really sick when you take sick leaves?” In the post, he also pointed out that “managers are so used to breaching boundaries and breathing down the necks of the employees. Everyone complained about Indian work culture and called it toxic.” According to him “what Tesla is up to is just the next level of toxicity.”

Shared just a day ago, the post has garnered more than 3,500 upvotes, and a mixed bag of responses, with many users recounting negative experiences with employers responding poorly to sick days.

Responding to the post, Reddit user Abhinav Patel shared a story about his boss checking on him after an accident. “I once had an accident and my kneecap got dislocated. Mind you, this happened on my way to the office. When I informed my manager, she instructed me to get to the office for a half day,” Patel wrote.

In response, the original poster commented, “Not surprised, they get some gratification by speaking like a manager. My manager once gave me a video call to check if I was really on my way to the hospital to see my relative who was hospitalised.”

Another user recounted an incident where her boss attempted to determine the authenticity of her menstrual pain, stating, “I had one mentor once who tried to check if I had menstrual pain.”

Reddit user named Madhurima wrote, “My manager once accused me of faking the reading on my thermometer (102° fever).”
