A 20-year-old woman’s Reddit post about her parents arguing on Diwali has struck a chord online, igniting a discussion on how family conflicts can take a toll on mental health during festive times.
She took to the ‘r/India’ subreddit to describe how seeing her parents fight has become an unsettling ritual every festival.
Titled “Parents fighting on Diwali”, her post detailed the emotional strain she experiences. “Morning to noon everything was fine. Then one argument happened between my mum and dad (we are only three in my family). My mum left the Diwali puja, and only my father and I continued. It’s nothing new; this happens almost every festival at my home. I’m 20, and this has severely affected me mentally and emotionally. After this, I get a mental breakdown,” she wrote.
She also asked the community, “Has anyone else ever faced a similar situation, or am I the only unlucky one today?”
Her story quickly drew responses, with many Reddit users sharing their own experiences and offering words of support and understanding.
A user commented, “Going through this for ages and today was like no other. So locked myself up in my room and watched Greater Kalesh at noon and now Dhadak 2. Then got mad at the world and here I am on Reddit now to calm my mind. Ek baat bolu? Care na karna sikh lo. Aap bas 20 ke ho, mast life lesson hain yeh. Bohot se situations pe kaam aayenge. Especially aise toxicity at ghar (Can I tell you something? Learn not to care. You’re just 20 — that’s a great life lesson. It’ll help in many situations, especially when there’s toxicity at home).”
Another user commented, “I have faced worse and still it continues. One thing I learnt the hard way is that I should just be quite and learn to be numb towards them and their problems. I have to much on my plate, my career studies and more important my mental peace. So my dear just let them be however and focus on yourself. I know it’s hard but trust me i exactly know your situation.”
A third person added, “U know this happens with me all the time so don’t take it seriously (on the heart) in the end they are gonna forget about it all so don’t worry miss.”
A fourth individual commented, “You’re not the only unluck one but today yeah you’re the only one.”
