Zomato, the delivery company, hogged headlines after CEO Deepinder Goyal announced ‘pure veg’ delivery fleet for vegetarians on Tuesday. Taking it to X, Goyal announced that Zomato customers “who have a 100 per cent vegetarian dietary preference” can switch to “pure veg fleet”— which will consist of restaurants that serve only vegetarian food.
“This means that a non-veg meal, or even a veg meal served by a non-veg restaurant will never go inside the green delivery box meant for our Pure Veg Fleet,” Goyal announced.
He continued, “This means that the fleet meant for vegetarian orders will not be identifiable on the ground (but will show on the app that your veg orders will be served by the veg only fleet). This will ensure that our red uniform delivery partners are not incorrectly associated with non-veg food, and blocked by any RWAs or societies during any special days… our riders’ physical safety is of paramount importance to us.”

Soon after the announcement, social media users reacted to it. While some appreciated the move, others called it discriminatory. A user commented, “Why to use green colour for pure veg deliveries ? We don’t want green color too for “pure veg”. And stop using fossil fuel from the burried prehistoric marine animals for the “pure veg” fleet.” Another user wrote, “True. Vegetarians feel most comfortable in eating and ordering from ONLY VEGETARIAN restaurants. The biggest concern is how their foods are handled. Whether separate utensils and oils are used or not ?”
“It wasn’t enough that our food is considered a sin to eat, us filthy for eating it, and to be discriminated for cooking or ordering it at home. Now we watch as RWAs with their history of great decisions make houses “pure veg fleet only”,” the third user reacted.
After the backlash, Goyal announced that Zomato is rolling back the move to introduce green uniforms for its new fleet, clarifying that all their riders would continue to wear red.
