Cyclonic Storm Fengal crossed over the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry early on Sunday morning. Both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been witnessing heavy rain since Thursday, leading to the closure of Chennai Airport until 4 AM on Sunday. Amid several videos of destruction on social media, footage of an Airbus A320 neo plane of IndiGo Airlines struggling to land during the cyclonic storm is stirring up attention.
The viral clip shows the IndiGo flight preparing to touch the ground during heavy rain and strong winds. When the plane’s wheels reach just inches from the ground, it flies off again, aborting the landing.
Sharing the video, an X handle @aviationbrk wrote, “Challenging conditions at Chennai International airport as cyclone Fengal makes landfall near Puducherry and is likely to cross the Tamil Nadu coasts in the next three to four hours. The cyclonic storm brought heavy rains in the coastal districts, inundating houses and hospitals.”
The handle also shared the Chennai International Airport’s statement that read, “Following consultations with AAI Headquarters and considering feedback from stakeholders, it has been decided to extend the closure of operations through a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) until 0400 IST on 1st December 2024. We recommend passengers check with their respective airlines regarding their flights.”

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Fengal’s movement has been extremely slow even after the landfall and the storm has remained close to the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast since last night. “Cyclone Fengal moved south-westwards with a speed of 7 km/h during the past 6 hours. It is likely to move westwards slowly and weaken gradually into a deep depression over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next three hours,” IMD said on Sunday.
Three people were electrocuted in rain-related incidents in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, KKSSR Ramachandran informed that there were no immediate reports of any major damage.
