Delhi was greeted by overcast skies on Sunday morning following a night of intense rainfall and thunderstorms that disrupted daily life across the city. The severe weather conditions led to a diversion of 49 flights, while waterlogging on roads caused severe waterlogging in several parts of the national capital.

In several parts of the city, flooding was so extensive that vehicles were fully submerged, forcing commuters to abandon them and seek safety. Images and videos circulating on social media showed dramatic scenes of waterlogged streets and stranded commuters.

Videos shared by news agency ANI show scenes of flooding across Delhi. One clip from Delhi Cantt showed a bus and a car submerged, highlighting the severity of the waterlogging. Another video, filmed at Minto Road, showed a car nearly fully underwater, underscoring the city’s ongoing struggle with drainage issues during heavy rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert for an approaching thunderstorm from the west and northwest, likely to impact Delhi and neighbouring areas. Officials urged residents to exercise caution, advising them to avoid open spaces, sheltering under trees, or standing near unstable structures.

People were also warned to stay away from water bodies and weak boundary walls, as the risk of accidents remained high due to the inclement conditions. Authorities report that at least 12 lives have been lost due to the powerful storms that have swept through the region in May. Over 300 trees have been uprooted, and extensive damage has been inflicted on infrastructure. Large areas of the capital have been left dealing with power outages, flooded streets, and road blockages, further straining emergency response efforts.

On May 15, powerful winds swept in dust from Pakistan and northwestern India, creating a dense haze that significantly reduced visibility and deteriorated air quality. Then, on May 21, following a scorching heat index that peaked at 50 degrees, sudden wind gusts reaching speeds of 80 km/h brought a dramatic shift, causing temperatures to drop by 14 degrees within a matter of hours.
