The Afghanistan cricket team were the surprise package at the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, where they sprung up surprise victories over England and Pakistan and narrowly lost to the eventual champions, Australia.
Afghanistan’s stellar performance with four wins in nine matches put them at sixth place in the 10-team tournament. Their opener Ibrahim Zadran had a memorable tournament as he became the first Afghanistan player to score a century at the World Cup. The 21-year-old hit an unbeaten 129 off 143 balls at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on November 7.
When Afghanistan scripted history by beating Pakistan on October 23, Zadran scored 87 off 113 balls. On Saturday, Zadran posted online about the historic day when he won the player of the match award.
“October 23rd 2023 will always be special in my heart. Never felt energetic like that in a cricket game before. What a blessed evening that was,” Zadran wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The post by Zadran reminded netizens of Virat Kohli’s tweet from last year, which was also ditto, except for the year.
“October 23rd 2022 will always be special in my heart. Never felt energetic like that in a cricket game before. What a blessed evening that was,” Kohli wrote on X on November 26, 2022.
Kohli had then played a sublime innings of 82 not out in 53 balls against Pakistan as India won by four wickets in the ICC T20I World Cup in Australia’s Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“You should always be energetic in all matches dear. More power to you and good luck!!” an X user commented. “That was exceptional inning Ibrahim. Wishing you many more,” said another.
