As millions of devotees continue to attend the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, traffic in the area remains disrupted, causing inconvenience to visitors. A new video showing a never-ending traffic jam on the Sangam road, crawling at a snail’s pace amid police barricades set up for the orderly movement of pilgrims, is doing rounds on social media. Several posts stated that the traffic jam was between 200-300 km long.
After the video was shared widely, several people raised concerns about the management of the world’s largest religious and spiritual congregation by the Yogi Adityanath-led government.
On Monday, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticised the Uttar Pradesh Government over the traffic issue, claiming it has led to a shortage of essential commodities and inconvenienced devotees visiting Mahakumbh.
“Due to the traffic jams everywhere in Prayagraj, neither food grains, vegetables, spices are available nor medicines, petrol-diesel. Due to this, the condition of crores of hungry, thirsty, tired and exhausted devotees stuck in Prayagraj and Maha Kumbh premises and on the roads leading to Prayagraj is getting worse every hour. This is a very serious situation,” Yadav said in a post, loosely translated from Hindi, on X.
Sharing the video, he wrote, “Just like in states, when the constitutional system fails, the command is given to someone else, similarly, seeing the chaos in Maha Kumbh, a capable person should be given the command of governance. Incompetent people can spread false propaganda, not true system,” he added.
