Twitter’s 140 character limit per tweet has always been a hot topic for discussion. There have been speculations in the past if the character limit would ever increase but no confirmation was given. However, Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey recently informed the users that they are running a test with increased characters on a selected group. The character limit will be increased from 140 to 280.
Stating that it is a small change but a big move for Twitter to shift from 140 characters — which was an ‘arbitrary choice based on the 160 character SMS limit’ — Dorsey highlighted that this move was to solve the character limit constraints people feel while tweeting. The tweet, however, received a mixed response from the users.
While some users welcomed the change, other listed out other ‘important’ issues that Twitter needs to deal with. Interestingly, some users also added a little humour to their responses by editing Dorsey’s 280 character tweet and bringing it under the original 140 character count.
