The saying “A dog is a man’s best friend” has been reaffirmed in countless ways, but the story of Belka, a devoted canine, has given it an even deeper meaning. Her unwavering loyalty moved hearts worldwide when she refused to leave the site where her owner drowned.

The incident occurred when a 59-year-old man was cycling near a frozen river. The ice gave way under him, plunging him into the freezing waters. A passerby tried to rescue him, but the river’s strong currents carried him away. A multi-day search was carried out by rescue teams, and his body was found downstream in the Ufa River in Russia.

While the tragedy in itself is harrowing, Belka’s loyalty, too, caught the world’s attention. For four days, she remained by the riverbank, waiting as though she believed her owner would come back. Even after his family took her home, Belka repeatedly returned to the same spot.
