A doctor in China, who lost an impressive 25 kg in just 42 days, has gained social media attention after winning several awards at a fitness competition, according to a report by the South China Morning Post. Wu Tiangen, a 31-year-old surgeon at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University in central Hubei province, decided to embark on his fitness journey after gaining weight due to the sedentary nature of his hospital work.

In 2023, Wu was diagnosed with a mild case of fatty liver, with his weight reaching 97.5 kg. As a surgeon, he regularly helped obese patients lose weight through surgery. However, after recognising his own condition, Wu decided it was time to make a change. “If I can’t save myself, how can I save others?” Wu told the South China Morning Post.

He reached out to Shi Fan, a top athlete who won the Overall Fit Model championship at the IFBB World Fit Model Championships in Lithuania the previous year, to be his coach and began his weight loss journey.

The student-coach duo created a plan to shed fat and build muscle in a short time. The key elements of the plan were two hours of exercise each day and a six hours of consistent sleep. Wu’s commitment was so strong that he managed to lose the weight in just six weeks, according to the report.

As the competition neared, he intensified his training, spending nearly four hours a day in the gym. Standing at 182 cm and weighing 73.5 kg, Wu competed in the Tianrui Cup Fitness and Bodybuilding Match in January. Despite being the only doctor in the event, the challenge was daunting, but Wu triumphed, winning champion titles in both the newcomer and fit models categories, as well as the award for most popular participant award.

When asked for advice on how others can achieve a healthy lifestyle like his, Wu said, “You should create a long-term plan for weight loss and stick to it. I don’t recommend extreme, short-term methods that involve eating very little.”
