A British travel vlogger has drawn attention to the growing litter problem at Kerala’s famed Varkala cliffs, calling the situation “absolutely disgusting”.’ In a video that has since gone viral, Alex Wanders is seen strolling along the cliffside, admiring the stunning view before panning his camera to piles of garbage, plastic bottles, beer cans, wrappers, and even flip-flops, strewn across the ground and spilling into the Arabian Sea.
“Kerala, I am disappointed. Human beings of planet Earth, why are you like this?” Wanders says in frustration. “Look how beautiful this place is, but of course, it’s completely ruined by trash.”
As he carefully walks closer to the edge to show the extent of the pollution, he adds, “We have sweet wrappers, bottle caps, chocolate wrappings, plastic bottles, beer bottles, and plastic bags full of stuff dropping straight into the ocean. Yay, environmental disaster… I’m not gonna lie, it’s absolutely disgusting. Such a beautiful place completely ruined.”
The vlogger said the trash had spoiled his experience of Varkala’s cliffs but hoped his video would make people more conscious about not littering.
After the clip began circulating on Instagram, many viewers applauded him for shedding light on the issue. Others hoped that the video might prompt action from the authorities. An Instagram user wrote, “Glad you shared this. There are plenty of places we can improve on, I hope we learn about cleanliness too soon.”
Another user commented, “As a Keralite, we are sorry about this…we will try to make it a better place, both for you and for ourselves.”
Some also urged authorities to take stronger action. A third user commented, “I’ve been raising this issue with the Kerala government for quite a long I’ve have wrote them How the waste management needs to be upgraded rapidly as the tourism is getting on peak and also there is zero awareness and actions against migrant workers in Kerala who litter ridiculously.”
A fourth user wrote, “People of kerala has better civic sense but still we can spot numerous people dump wastes. As a keralite, sometimes it’s a shame when i see our own people dumping wastes on public. It’s time to stop it guys! Upgrade the civic sense.”
