Florida Highway Patrol officials in Tampa made a devastating discovery on Wednesday morning, October 9, while preparing to breach the impact of Hurricane Milton. The officials came across a terrified dog tied to a fence, submerged up to its stomach, and frantically barking. The dog seemed abandoned in the path of the approaching storm by its humans.

The officers parked their vehicles and waded through the soaked field to rescue the helpless animal. FHP Tampa shared a video of the dramatic rescue on X, urging people not to abandon their pets: “FHP Troopers rescued a dog left tied to a pole on I-75 near Bruce B Downs Blvd this morning. Do NOT do this to your pets please…”

Thankfully, the dog was taken to a veterinary doctor, where it was examined and certified healthy. The troopers later updated their post with a photo of the now-safe pup.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis shared the video saying, “It is cruel for anyone to leave a dog tied to a post in the middle of an oncoming storm. FL will hold anyone who mistreats pets accountable.”

The video posted by FHP Tampa has gone viral, with many demanding the dog’s owners be held accountable and face arrest for the deed. “I hope that dog is chipped, and they find the owner and charge them with Animal abuse that his horrible we are literally getting hit by a hurricane in hours,” one X user wrote. “Absolutely heartbreaking and cruel that anyone would abandon their pet. Well done and thank you for rescuing them,” another user said.

A third individual commented, “God bless you for saving this poor sweet dog. The trooper in the video should be commended for his kindness, compassion and understanding. I’m so happy that you cared enough to help this dog. I hope he finds the best home possible. This is how it’s done.”
