Indians celebrate first-ever Durga Puja at Times Square in NYC, videos go viral

From the idol of Goddess Durga to the Dhunuchi dance, Times Square in New York City saw Indians celebrating Durga Puja.

It’s that time of the year when streets in India are lit up and stunning idols of Goddess Durga are installed in pandals across the country. From garba to dandiya to pandal hopping, the festivities involve many cultural activities. Amid the celebrations, videos of Indians celebrating Durga Puja for the first time at Times Square in New York City are stirring up attention on social media.

A viral video captures a singer singing the popular Bengali song Dhak Baja Kashor Baja as several Indians, dressed in colourful traditional clothes, dance around the Goddess Durga idol. Numerous billboards can also be at the iconic spot.

Sharing the video, X handle @MeghUpdates wrote, “History has been Scripted !!! For the 1st time, Durga puja was organized at the centre of Times Square, New York City, United States.”

The video quickly gained traction as social media users flocked to the comment section. A user wrote, “The respect and recognition Indians are getting abroad nowadays was never seen or given before.” Another user commented, “It is a proud moment for all Indians to see India’s culture and civilizations being respected across the world.”

In another video shared by popular influencer Ruchika Jain, several women can be seen performing the Dhunuchi dance at Times Square. According to the viral post, the festivities have been organised by the Bengali Club in the United States. “Experience traditional festivities, cultural performances, and a sense of community as we honor this cherished festival. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Indian culture right in the heart of New York City!” the caption on the video read.

Several X users took to the platform to share the experience of their first-ever Durga Puja in the US. “Pujo at Times Square was surreal, serendipitous, cacophonous, and splendid. Everything I had hoped it would be, and more,” a user wrote.

Durga Puja is a major Hindu festival celebrated every year by the Bengali community in the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Odisha, Tripura, and the diaspora from these areas.
