On Wednesday, a technical glitch left tens of thousands of Bank of America customers shocked as their account balances appeared as zero.

The problems began around 12:30 PM ET, with Downdetector––an online platform that gives real-time information on the status of various websites and services––reporting a surge in outage complaints, surpassing 18,000 by 1 PM. Most of the reports came from major cities like New York and Los Angeles. Many customers were either unable to access their accounts or were alarmed to find their balances displayed as zero.

Understandably, social media was flooded with posts from worried customers. Some expressed genuine panic, fearing their money had been stolen or lost entirely.

One X user posted about the incident; “There’s some kind of glitch on the @BankofAmerica website that shows $0 in all accounts and honestly i think they owe everybody some cash for pain and suffering because that was extremely stressful for a second there.”

Many users shared their experience in response. “Thank you for posting! I couldn’t even get into my account and the customer service number isn’t working either,” a user wrote. Another user commented, “Same. I was (am still?) panicking hard.”

The issue also quickly became the centre of many memes:

Bank of America recognised the problem some customers were facing with account access and balance inquiries. In a statement to various news outlets, the Bank said, “Some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today. These issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience.” However, they did not provide details on what caused the outage or when the systems will be completely restored.
