Munich leads the ranking, with around 86 per cent of its population living within one kilometre of a car-free space, alongside hundreds of miles of bike trails.

It is followed by Milan, Warsaw, Helsinki, and Paris. Tokyo is the only non-European city to break into the top 10, placing 6th globally thanks to its extensive pedestrian networks.

Other notable mentions include Sydney (#11) and Melbourne (#17) in Australia, while New York City is the highest-ranked American entry at #34, followed closely by San Francisco (#35) and Boston (#36).

In contrast, the United States also accounts for several of the least walkable cities, with Dallas, Houston, and Chicago all appearing in the bottom 10.

At the very bottom is Johannesburg, South Africa, with a walkability safety score of just 19.31, making it the least walkable city in the world.

However, Mumbai stands out for affordability, offering one of the world’s cheapest public transit systems, second only to Buenos Aires.
