(Image Source: Reuters)X Down Today News: Cloudflare has said that it has resolved an incident that caused an hours-long global outage of its services, taking down multiple websites across the internet including Elon Musk-owned X, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Perplexity, and several other services, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
In an update at 8:12pm IST, Cloudflare said that it has implemented a fix and monitoring for errors to ensure all services are back to normal.
“The team is continuing to focus on restoring service post-fix. We are mitigating several issues that remain post-deployment,” it added. The web infrastructure company first reported experiencing “an internal service degradation” at 11:48 UTC (5:18pm India time).
Elon Musk-owned X was down for thousands of users in several parts of the world, including India and the United States, as per Downdetector.com. Besides X, users also reported having trouble accessing several other websites, including AI chatbot websites such as ChatGPT and Claude. However, it is not confirmed whether these disruptions are related.

This incident comes nearly a month after a massive outage hit cloud services provider Amazon Web Services (AWS) and took down swathes of the internet. AWS had said that it traced the source of the problem to the “DynamoDB endpoint in the US-East-1 Region.”
Experts have previously said that the concentration of the internet’s core infrastructure in the hands of just a few major cloud providers has created critical single points of failure. A three-to-six-day outage at one of the top three cloud providers could cause $15 billion in damages in the US, according to a 2018 study by insurance giant Lloyd. The risk management processes of several big tech companies are also opaque.

There have been more than 11,500 reports of issues with the social media platform from users in the US as of 06:41 a.m. ET (5:20 pm IST), according to Downdetector, which tracks outages by collating status reports from a number of sources.

In an earlier update, the company said, “Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which impacts multiple customers: Widespread 500 errors, Cloudflare Dashboard and API also failing.” “We are working to understand the full impact and mitigate this problem. More updates to follow shortly,” it added.
In a separate update regarding its support portal provider, Cloudflare warned that such customers might encounter errors viewing or responding to support cases. “Responses on customer inquiries are not affected, and customers can still reach us via live chat (Business and Enterprise) through the Cloudflare Dashboard, or via the emergency telephone line (Enterprise).”
“We are working alongside our 3rd party provider to understand the full impact and mitigate this problem,” the company further said.
