HSRP is also known as high security number plate (Express Photo)The government of India amended a new type of vehicle number plate called the High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) to solve several issues related to the identification of vehicles a few years ago. These number plates will have special features such as a 3D hologram, reflective film with an inscription, which says ‘India,’ and a laser-etched serial number, which makes it tamper-proof.
Vehicles sold on or after July 2022 now come with HSRP-type number plates by default, several states like Karnataka have now made it mandatory for users to upgrade the number plates of older vehicles before February 17, 2024. Those who do not comply with the law will have to pay a fine of Rs 500 to Rs 1,000, depending on the vehicle type.

HSRP stands for High-Security Registration Plate, which is a standard set by the Govt of India on how a vehicle registration number plate should look, which also includes several security features such as international registration code, laser etched unique serial number, 3D hologram of ashok chakra, and for police, these number plates are easy to identify, and one won’t be able to recreate or tamper these number plates easily.
Right now, it is mandatory to have an HSRP number plate on all the officially registered vehicles in the country, and here is how you can get an HSRP number plate for your vehicle from the comfort of your home. Even in states like Delhi, UP, Tamil Nadu, and more, however, as of now, there is no official deadline in these states, unlike Karnataka.

To apply for an HSRP number plate, one needs details like vehicle registration number, chassis number, and engine number. On top of that, you will also need a phone number that can receive a time password, email ID, and either a UPI ID or credit or debit card to make online payments.
