Bored of sharing the same old WhatsApp stickers with your friends, family, and colleagues? You will soon be able to create custom stickers using AI within WhatsApp. Meta is currently testing a new generative-AI-backed feature on WhatsApp, where, users can create custom stickers with just a text prompt. This allows users to instantly turn a thought into a sticker.

This feature is currently available for select users who have access to WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.17.8 or newer versions. Users with this version of WhatsApp can quickly turn their idea into an animated sticker in a jiffy. However, the AI sticker generator feature on WhatsApp is currently available only to a limited number of users and the company is expected to roll out this update to a wider audience in the coming days.

Go to WhatsApp, click on any chat and select the smiley icon to open the stickers window. If you have access to the AI sticker creation tool, you will see an option called “generate your own AI sticker” and click on that.

Click on Create and enter a text prompt like “cat laughing on a skateboard” to create an animated sticker. Depending on the description, WhatsApp will present a few options.

Meta is also cautious about how it uses AI to generate new stickers, where there is also a provision to report inappropriate or harmful stickers. Similarly, these stickers follow a certain design pattern, which makes it easy for users to distinguish between regular and AI-generated stickers on WhatsApp.

It looks like the company is still evaluating various aspects of this feature and has therefore restricted this feature to select users. Social media platforms have been very cautious about how they use AI. Even then, AI has created havoc — for instance, Snapchat’s My AI recently posted a bizarre story, surprising the platform’s users.
