The PC industry might be on the decline and for most the immediate computer is a smartphone but that doesn’t mean threat vectors have gone away. In fact, they have turned more threatening than before. With many of us now on multiple operating systems, there is sudden rise to multiple type of threats, and it’s not just trojans or malware.

With increasing use of mobile devices for carrying out financial transactions, it is high time to look at a security tool that provides all around protection.

Norton Security Premium

Price : Rs 2,999 (1 year)

Getting Started

Gone are the days when security software came in a disk, they now come in the form of a booklet. The unique advantage of Norton Security Premium is its multiple device protection feature. One security software for multiple devices. Norton Security Premium covers 10 devices while Deluxe version covers only five devices.

The booklet from Norton has nothing but few top-shelf features and the activation code. First thing to do is register online at Norton’s site and add the newly purchased security key to your account.

The next step is to simply download Norton Security Suite online and sign in with the account created in previous step. It auto recognises the activation key and registers the device for year long protection. I used my key on Windows 10 PC, Android smartphone and even iPhone for testing it’s features.

What is good?

The most useful feature is the multiple device protection. It’s like elegance of Google Drive reaching your security software. Download, login and get protected. If you don’t have time and inclination to download software on every single device, this particular suite will definitely impress you.

The most advanced feature of Norton Security Premium is its anti-malware blocking mechanism. I just fired up my browser with a known malware hosting website and Norton blocked it right away. The database of Norton is rich and it can protect you from any kind of malware delivered either via web or mail or any other medium.

We are not yet done with emails and most of our inbox is generally filled with spams and if your email provider doesn’t filter them out then you can trust Norton to do it for you. Also Norton Security Premium sets the benchmark extremely high for protection from phishing mails. Norton recently revealed that an average Indian lost Rs 16,000 knowingly or unknowingly online and now you can save that money because Norton Security Premium instantly detects fraudulent websites.

My primary smartphone has been the one running Android for more than five years now and in all these years, I would say Norton is the best safety tool available on Play Store right now. For one it gives you full-fledged protection from known viruses and also scans downloaded app immediately. I must say it’s faster in that action than AVG Protection Pro. The Premium attributes include anti-theft feature, call blocking and anti phishing abilities. Norton also integrates with Google Play to warn users about privacy issues with a particular app.

Most security suites have been criticised for slowing down systems, but I didn’t find any noticeable issue with my computer after installing Norton Security Premium. My PC did boot little slower than before but I’m fine with it considering the premium protection I’m getting in return.

Also worth mentioning is Norton’s Safe Web feature which marks your search results green, orange or red based on safety. The feature extends with a neat Norton Secured mark on tested websites making your web experience more safer.

The security gap was visible in 2015 more than ever before. 2015 was the year when Android was exploited badly and Apple’s iOS saw vulnerabilities via Chinese apps. Apple took hit on the desktop side too. Once invincible Mac OS is no more safe enough and Norton fills those gaps with its own intelligent firewall. It fixes network permissions and monitors Internet behaviour on various programs and limits the bad ones.

For parents curious about their child’s behaviour online, Norton Security Premium’s Parental controls will come extremely handy. A simple configuration online allows for enforcing house rules across multiple devices registered with the suite. Registration asks for child’s date of birth and gender. Once configured, the security suite will block contents based on age and most importantly won’t allow the kid to create Facebook account by declaring false age.

Norton also offers 25GB online storage for backup of important files and documents which works exactly like Google Drive or OneDrive would. It saves documents excluding videos by default and updates the backed up files whenever system is idle.

We all have multiple accounts across mail services, social networks and individual websites. I tend to keep different passwords everywhere and had been using LastPass for keeping tab of those passwords. With LastPass compromised sometime back, Norton’s password manager as been the perfect replacement.

What’s not good?

My computer runs Windows 10 and I have been using Microsoft’s Edge browser for most daily activities. Norton’s web safety features are yet not supported and Norton mentions the same in its product catalogue.

Another notable thing here is the missing password management feature on Mac.

Verdict

There is absolutely nothing to complain about Norton’s Security Premium suite. For the record, BitDefender rates higher than Norton when it comes to malware detection and it doesn’t seem to be as quick as TrendMicro Titanium Security.

On the other hand, it leaps ahead of every other security suite with its complete security options. This one is by far the best multiple device protection software one should buy.

In a nutshell, it offers finest antiphishing performance and its firewall protection is second to none. Add it’s malware blocking and parental control feature, you won’t regret a bit for buying this Premium Security suite.
