YouTube, the popular video-sharing platform with billions of users worldwide is rolling out a new functionality that lets creators generate remixes of music videos from artists like Beyonce and Maggie Rogers for their Shorts.
The new ‘Remix’ feature allows users to reimagine music videos and opens up a new way for creators to bring out the creative side and increase engagement. It also gives YouTube an edge over TikTok, which happens to be its biggest short-form video rival.
Earlier this month, TikTok developer ByteDance found itself in a legal battle with Universal Music Group (UMG) over licensing, with the latter accusing Bytedance of trying to ‘bully’ the music giant into a bad deal, following which TikTok lost tracks from artists like Drake, Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo.
To remix a music video, launch the YouTube app on your device, open the video you want and tap the ‘Remix’ button in the menu bar below the video. Now, you will be presented with four options – Sound, Collab, Green Screen and Cut.
As the name suggests, choosing ‘Sound’ will let you take just the sound from the video and use it in your Short, while ‘Collab’ helps you create a Short alongside the video so your viewers and friends can dance side by side with the artist.
Choosing ‘Green Screen’ will let you use the video as the background for your Short whereas the ‘Cut’ button lets you extract a five-second clip and add it to your Short.
