YouTube has announced a new feature called Family Center that will let parents keep a closer eye on the accounts of their children through shared notifications and insights. The feature will start rolling out in all countries this week, the platform said in a blog post on Wednesday, September 4.
“This new experience is designed to keep parents informed about their teens’ channel activity on YouTube and help them provide encouragement and advice on responsible content creation,” YouTube said.
Under the Family Center option, parents and teens can link their YouTube accounts together. This will give parents access to insights on the channels of their teen children such as number of uploads, subscriptions, and comments.
Parents will also be notified via email whenever their teen children upload a video or start a livestream on their YouTube channel.
“The development of these products is guided by independent experts in child development, digital learning, and children’s media who hail from academic, nonprofit, and clinical backgrounds,” the Alphabet-owned company said.
It further revealed that youth-focused products like YouTube Kids sees over 100 million active logged-in and logged-out viewers every month. In November last year, the platform rolled out new safeguards for teens like limiting repeated recommendations of videos that compare physical features, idealise specific fitness levels, or display social aggression in the form of non-contact fights and intimidation.
