Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is undoubtedly one of the best ways to stay in touch with friends, family, and colleagues, but it is also a hotbed for spreading misinformation. While the company has taken several measures in the right direction to curb fake images and messages, the rise of fake images generated using AI is once again making rounds on the platform.

To combat this issue, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will help users quickly check the authenticity of an image, making it easier to see if it has been tampered with without leaving the app.

A recent version of WhatsApp beta for Android brings a new feature called ‘Search on web’, which triggers a reverse image search using Google Lens. To find the new option, tap on the image you want to search on WhatsApp and press the three-dot button on the top right. While this may not be useful for some, it eliminates the need to open your browser, launch Google Lens and upload the image you want to search.

Since the new reverse image search option is currently limited to the beta and is only available to a handful of testers, you might have to wait sometime before it rolls out for everyone.

Last month, WhatsApp introduced a new feature that allows users to store contacts in the app alongside another functionality that lets users mention others in their Status, which works similarly to Instagram Stories.
