WhatsApp is launching new security features to further protect users’ privacy and security. In a press release, the company announced new account protection features for when you switch to another device, new device verification checks, and a feature that lets you verify that you have a secure connection.

Account Protect

WhatsApp will now double-check if it’s really you when you switch to a new device with a new feature designed to block unauthorised account transfers. The messaging app may now ask users to verify their identity on their old device before they can switch their account to a new device. This extra security check aims to prevent hackers from hijacking WhatsApp accounts and accessing personal chats and data.

Automatic Security Codes

While users previously had to verify encryption by scanning a QR code when in person and by sharing a unique 60-digit code if remote, WhatsApp is now introducing a new cryptographic security feature to automatically verify a secure connection without the need for this long code.

It’s based on a process that automatically checks the security codes of the contacts and confirms that they match. Users can access this feature by tapping on the encryption tab under a contact’s info and see if their conversation is secure.

Device Verification

Citing how malware is used to advance account takeover (ATO) attacks that send messages without the user’s consent, WhatsApp says it’s added checks to help authenticate your account. The platform says that no action will be needed from the user end, but that the app will “better protect you if your device is compromised.”

WhatsApp says that these 3 features are only a few of the additional security features the platform will gain in the coming months and that it looks forward to announcing more updates soon.

This announcement comes after the launch of the “Stay Safe with WhatsApp” campaign launched by the platform on Wednesday. It aims to raise awareness about the various safety features pre-built into the messaging app.
