Meta has again updated its labelling policy for posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads that have been edited or modified using generative AI tools.
The tech giant said that the ‘AI Info’ label on such posts will no longer be displayed directly under the user’s name. Instead, it will be tucked away in the menu of the post that opens up by clicking the three dots above it.
However, content that has been detected as fully AI-generated by the company will still have the ‘AI Info’ label in the current position. Furthermore, Meta said that it will “share whether the content is labeled because of industry-shared signals or because someone self-disclosed.”
These changes are expected to be rolled out next week, the company said on Thursday, September 12. With AI editing tools becoming increasingly advanced, users could be more easily deceived since the ‘AI Info’ labels on AI-modified content will be hidden in the menu.
In July, Meta drew flak from users for incorrectly labelling real photos on its platforms as being ‘Made with AI’. Following the backlash, the company changed the wording of the label to ‘AI Info’ to better reflect that the posts may have been edited using AI-powered tools rather than being entirely created with AI.
