At least one brand working on 32MP camera with Helio X20 processor: MediaTek

MediaTek is bullish on the success of LTE in India, its Helio X20 processor brings support for 32MP smartphone camera

So, are you game for a 32MP rear camera? Well, chipmaker MediaTek is surely keen on seeing this high-spec camera coming on new smartphones later this year, thanks to its Helio X20 processor.

The fabless semiconductor company from Taiwan says there are “one or two brands” working on this capability. “It is a capability and not everyone will want to take it to the limit. Most companies will be evaluating the cost,” says Arthur Wang, senior director at MediaTek.

The 2.5 GHz Helio X20 processor will offer a CAT 6 LTE modem, 2560x1600p screen support and better battery life. The 2GHz Helio p10, on the other hand, claims to offer 21MP camera capability as well Full HD screen support.

MediaTek says about 15 per cent of the smartphones it sold in 2015 had LTE capability. In fact, the company claims to have powered over 1.5 billion devices, out of which just 400 million were smartphones. The company claims a 33 per cent market share in India with about 33 million units shipped with its processors.

Though still struggling to make a mark in markets like the US, where it has been unable to enter due to its inability to support Cat 7, 9 networks, MediaTek is bullish on the success of LTE in India. In fact, the company wants to double its LTE numbers in India by the end of the year. It is also going to test Video Over LTE in India by Q3, Wang said.
