The rise of manipulated images and misinformation on the internet has posed a serious challenge to the credibility of photojournalism. Leica is trying to combat those with a new camera that allows photographers to snap images with Content Credentials at the point of capture.

Called Leica M11-P, the company claims this is the “world’s first camera” with Content Credentials built-in. This means the camera automatically generates metadata for each image, including the basics like camera make and model, but also info like who captured an image and when, and how they did so. Leica says that this enables photographers to maintain “a degree of control” over their art, story, and context.

The camera also assigns a digital signature to each image, ensuring its integrity and authenticity. The metadata and signature are embedded into the image file, creating a chain of trust from camera to cloud.

Developed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) – a cross-industry organisation co-founded by Adobe that aims to create a more trustworthy internet – Content Credentials attaches additional information to content at export or download. It can show a detailed history of changes over time which can be verified using a feature called Verify. The standard is being implemented by leading organisations around the world, such as Adobe, Microsoft, Twitter, and others.

Photographers can view and manage their Content Credentials using the Leica Fotos app, which also allows them to share their images online with verified metadata. Alternatively, they can use the CAI’s website to verify their images or upload them to other platforms that support Content Credentials.

The launch of the Leica M11-P camera could be a significant milestone for the future of photojournalism. It marks the first time that Content Credentials are available in a consumer-ready product, paving the way for widespread adoption and usage.

And as AI-generated content – particularly images – gather steam, the Leica M11-P camera can help simplify the process of adding content credentials to photos, and in turn, help viewers to verify the authenticity and credibility of the content. At the same time, the standard can help creators get proper recognition and credit for their work, while also letting them indicate how they want their content to be used by others.
