A report published earlier this year stated that India ranked as the 7th most cyber-breached nation globally. While a recent report by the cybersecurity company Surfshark suggests that India has moved up a rank in the list, the breach rate is around 75 per cent lower in Q1 2023.
According to Surfshark’s analysis, the total number of leaked accounts stood at 8.5 million in Q4 2022. But in the first quarter of 2023, the number has dropped to 2 million leaked accounts. To put it in another way, 65 accounts were hacked per minute in Q4 2022, but now it stands at 16 accounts per minute.
The study also suggests that globally, the number of breached users has seen a 49 per cent decrease. If we talk of global breaches, Russia continues to be the leader with record 41.6 million accounts breached, followed by the United States with 5 million accounts. Third and fourth places are secured by Taiwan and France with a total of 3.9 million and 3.2 million accounts breached.
In Q1 2023, Europe was the only region in the world that witnessed significant quarter-over-quarter growth, with the number of breaches doubling from 9.9 million to 17.5 million. Asia is the second most affected region, accounting for 10.6 million breaches.
The top 3 countries that saw the most increase in breaches are Taiwan and Saudi Arabia with 20 times increase in leaked accounts, while the number of accounts that were comprised in South Korea increased by 12 times.
