Last month, Google announced that Android 16 and WearOS 6 will be getting a new design language called “Material 3 Expressive”. In a blog post, the tech giant said the new UI redesign “feels even more fluid and introduces a system of more natural, springy animations.”
Since then, Google has been giving some of its Android apps the Material 3 Expressive treatment, with some elements appearing in apps like Gmail, Messages and Google Photos, which is reportedly getting a major overhaul.
Google also seems to be making some changes to how photo previews appear in the Memories carousel, with the updated design now featuring a heart-shaped border that separates cards into two sections. The bottom half now shows the image, while the top of the carousel has a solid background with text on top.
The tech giant is also reportedly getting a redesigned video player and a redesigned search results page. And while the latest version of Google Photos does not feature the floating bottom bar and rounded image previews, there’s a chance that Google might introduce these changes before the updated app is rolled out to everyone.
Google is also updating the app loading icon to match the new Material 3 Expressive animations. A few days ago, Google redesigned the album view, enabling users to scan QR codes to share an album and moved the Sort photos button to the top bar. The new Google Photos app with Material 3 Expressive design is expected to roll out alongside Android 16 QPR1, which Google says will be coming later this year.
